IAN HUNTER

Ian Hunter Patterson, (born 3 June 1939), is an English singer-songwriter who is best known as the lead singer of the English rock band Mott The Hoople from its inception in 1969 to its dissolution in 1974, and at the time of its 2009 reunion. Hunter was a musician and songwriter before joining Mott The Hoople, and continued in this vein after he left the band. He embarked on a solo career despite ill health and disillusionment with commercial success, and often worked in collaboration with Mick Ronson, David Bowie's sideman and arranger from the Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars period.

Mott The Hoople achieved a certain level of commercial success, and attracted a small but devoted fan base. As a solo artist, Hunter charted with lesser-known but more wide-ranging works outside of the rock mainstream. His best-known solo songs are "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", later covered by Great White, and "Cleveland Rocks," a cover version of which became the theme song for the American TV series The Drew Carey Show.

1. [1975] Ian Hunter (2005 30th Anniversary Edition)

Ian Hunter's first solo album following his departure from Mott The Hoople. It's also the first of many solo albums on which he collaborates with Mick Ronson.

The single "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" would be his first and last top-20 single in the UK. The pop-metal band Great White would later cover the song on their 1989 album ...Twice Shy.

In 2005, the album was reissued with several bonus tracks.

01 - Once Bitten Twice Shy

2. [1976] All-American Alien Boy (2006 30th Anniversary Edition)

All-American Alien Boy is the second solo album by Ian Hunter. Because of management issues, Mick Ronson did not appear on this album; instead, Hunter brought in keyboardist Chris Stainton in order to act as a balancing force in the studio. Unlike his previous album, the album didn't feature any of his trademark rockers and he opted for a more jazzy direction including bass legend Jaco Pastorius. Also features members of Queen providing backing vocals on "You Nearly Did Me In".

In 2006, the album was reissued with several bonus tracks.

01 - Letter To Britannia From The Union Jack
02 - All American Alien Boy
03 - Irene Wilde
04 - Restless Youth
05 - Rape
06 - You Nearly Did Me In

3. [1977] Overnight Angels (2002 Remaster)

Overnight Angels is the third solo album by Ian Hunter.

After the poor sales of his previous album, Hunter's apparent aim for this record was to re-emphasize faster songs with more of a rock feel, and he recruited the well-regarded Roy Thomas Baker to produce. However, the album received mixed reviews, and Columbia Records refused to release it in the U.S., according to Hunter because he had just fired his manager. Columbia reportedly told Hunter they would release it once he had a manager and tour in place to support the album. The release didn't occur however as Hunter left the label but the album did become available as an import when Hunter's next album became a minor hit. Hunter later disavowed the album and described it as a "mistake".

Hunter later went on record as stating he disliked the album because he felt the album was forced and, in particular, his vocals which he felt he sang in too high a register.

The song "England Rocks" (originally a non-album B-side) would become one of his best-known songs, retitled "Cleveland Rocks" on Hunter's next tour, and re-recorded with the new title for his next album.

Despite the above, I personally think this album is great.

02 - Shallow Crystals
03 - Overnight Angels
04 - Broadway
05 - Justice Of The Peace
06 - (Miss) Silver Dime

4. [1979] You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic (2009 2CD 30th Anniversary Edition)

You're Never Alone with A Schizophrenic is the fourth solo album by Ian Hunter. The album features members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band as the backing band. It is considered by many to be Hunter's best recording.

The title was dreamed up by co-producer Mick Ronson which he had planned for one of his solo albums. Hunter loved the title so much that he offered Ronson co-writing credit on the first single "Just Another Night" in exchange for the use of the title for the album. "Just Another Night" reached No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album became one of Hunter's biggest sellers at the time. Later, singer Barry Manilow covered the song "Ships" for his album One Voice which became a top ten hit.

In 2009 EMI released a 30th anniversary reissue of the album remastered with 5 bonus tracks of out-takes on the first disc and a second disc of live tracks recorded on the tour to support the album but previously unreleased. The reissue also came with a deluxe booklet discussing the making the album along with vintage and new interviews with Hunter.

The song "Cleveland Rocks" (originally recorded as a single for Columbia Records and entitled "England Rocks" around the time of Overnight Angels) later became a hit when The Presidents Of The United States re-recorded the song as the theme song to The Drew Carey Show, raising Hunter's profile and prompting the release of the album on CD.

Welcome To The Club is the first live album by Ian Hunter. After the unexpected success of You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic, Chrysalis Records wanted to keep the momentum by releasing another album. Unsure of which direction he should take, Ian Hunter finally decided to collaborate with Mick Jones, who gave Hunter's songs a tougher and heavier touch. 9. IAN HUNTER/MICK RONSON [1989] Y U I Orta (2003 Reissue)

YUI Orta is the seventh solo album of Ian Hunter. The title is a play on the phrase "Why you, I ought to...". Hunter reunites again with longtime collaborator Mick Ronson. It was intended as a sort of comeback for both men, but the record company did only little promotion and eventually they were dropped from the label. There were plans for a follow up, but these were put on hold when Ronson was diagnosed with liver cancer.

In "Big Time", Hunter borrows the riff from his own song "Once Bitten Twice Shy". In "Tell It Like It Is" Ronson borrows the riff from "Get It On".

In 2003, the album was reissued with two bonus tracks.

19. [2009] Man Overboard

Man Overboard was issued on 21 July 2009 by New West Records. This 11-song set is a stunning follow up to the overwhelmingly critically acclaimed Shrunken Heads album from 2007. After two albums that were somewhat political in nature (2001's Rant and 2007's Shrunken Heads), 2009 finds Ian in a more mellow frame of mind.

Man Overboard was produced by Andy York (veteran guitarist for John Mellencamp) and Ian Hunter and features a backing band of superstar talent comprised of Steve Holley on drums and percussion (Wings, Joe Cocker), Paul Page on bass (Dion), Jack Petruzzelli on electric guitar (Rufus Wainwright, Joan Osbourne), James Mastro on electric guitar (Patti Smith, John Cale), Andy Burton on piano and organ (The Db's) and Producer Andy York on guitar and backing vocals.

Live In London is a retitled and truncated re-release of the 2004 show at the London Astoria previously released as the Just Another Night DVD and the CD entitled The Truth, The Whole Truth And Nuthin' But The Truth. It's a show that's seen so many releases because it deserves it: Hunter was supported by a crackerjack band featuring his old Mott The Hoople running mate Mick Ralphs, and they ran through a set of hits with a vigour that belies their age. This re-release has the bonus track of an acoustic version of "All The Young Dudes".
